What is Big Cartel anyway? What features does it have?
Big Cartel is a simple e-commerce platform that provides you with your own independent store to sell your stuff online. It’s targeted to small, indie brand owners, but anybody can sell products using Big Cartel. You can check out the features of Big Cartel on their Tour page. Is there any way that I can “test drive” a theme before purchasing a theme?
Sure there is. You can download our free Big Cartel theme (hosted on T-Shirt Magazine) to get an idea of how our themes work before making a purchase decision.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit/debit cards via PayPal. You don’t need to have a PayPal account to order.
Once I purchase a theme how do I receive it?
You will be sent an e-mail that contains the files for the theme, which you will have to download, by clicking the download link. Once you download the product, make sure to unzip the compressed zip file (for themes only).
How secure is this site?
Theme Fiend uses PayPal for processing payments, and PayPal automatically encrypts your confidential information in transit from your computer to ours using the Secure Sockets Layer protocol (SSL) with an encryption key length of 128-bits (the highest level commercially available.
If I’m not satisfied with the theme that I purchased, can I get a refund?
Sorry, but since we’re selling digital products, we do not give refunds once you’ve purchased a theme from us. Make sure to view all screenshots of the theme, before making your purchase decision, to make sure that you purchased the theme that’s right for you.
Getting Started
How do I actually put the theme I downloaded on my site?
Once you have downloaded and unziped the files for the theme, you should see all of the theme files. Most of them will be in html or css form. In order to view the actual code for the theme, you must right-click the file (Home, Products, Cart, etc), click the ‘open with’ option, and choose a text editor program (preferably Wordpad).
Once you open the file in the text editor, copy and paste the code in the corresponding page of your Big Cartel account admin. For example, if you copied the the code from the ‘Products’ file, make sure to paste it into the ‘Products’ page in your Big Cartel account admin. Also, make sure to delete all code that’s currently in the page so that it’s blank, before pasting the code from the file of the theme that you downloaded.
The default theme that you must have selected for your shop, before installing any files, is Big Cartel’s ‘Sexy’ theme.(Note: For the code in the file ‘styles’, paste it in the Design>Basics>CSS page section, making sure that all text currently in the page is removed before pasting the code.)
Is it possible to import one of your themes into my Big Cartel shop, the same way that I can export a theme?
The only way to ‘import’ the theme is by copying each page’s code from the theme files and pasting them into the corresponding pages in your Big Cartel admin. The option to import a theme with the click of a button is currently not possible, but hopefully in the future Big Cartel will make that option possible.
Editing/Changes
How do I change the header image?
To edit the header image, simply upload a new image on the Design>Basics page in your Big Cartel admin panel. In the text field labeled ‘Header image’, click the browse button, and search for and select your desired logo file.
Once I purchase a theme, am I able to change the colors and images?
Yes, you can change the colors of text and backgrounds by editing them in the Design>Basics>Simple section in your Big Cartel account admin. In some cases, editing colors won’t work on the ‘Simple’ section of the ‘Basics’ page, so you’ll need to click the CSS tab and make edits in the CSS page. This requires some basic CSS knowledge, so if you’re not sure how to change colors or images yourself, it’s best to not mess with the code.
